Abstract

Polystyrene has been often functionalized for its use in various special applications but most often the reactive functional groups have been substituted on its benzene ring. In the present work, epoxy functional groups have been inserted on the backbone of a high molecular weight polystyrene by following a sequence of reaction steps. The products of these reaction steps have been characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR spectroscopy, HPLC, DSC, and quantitative titration techniques. Epoxidized polystyrene can be used as a compatibilizer for blending polystyrene with other polymers that have functional groups reactive toward epoxy. As examples, polystyrene has been blended with cellulose and ground waste rubber tire using this compatibilizer. From the study of mechanical properties of the blends it has been shown that addition of epoxidised polystyrene compatibilizer brings about improvement in properties, indicating greater dispersion of the blend components.
