Abstract
X.p.s. and u.p.s. studies on the adsorption of $HCO_2$H on barium-covered Cu and Ag surfaces saturated with oxygen show an enhanced reactivity of adsorbed oxygen towards proton abstraction from $HCO_2H$. Two distinct types of adsorbed formate species, one associated with Cu or Ag and the other associated with barium are seen at 300 K. The formates associated with Cu or Ag show greater thermal stability and higher activation energy of decomposition in presence of barium. The decomposition of formate on oxygen presorbed Cu gives only $H_2$O and $CO_2$ while on the barium covered Cu and Ag surfaces, the formation of CO is also observed. Quantitative estimates of the surface concentrations of adsorbed species has been made with respect to temperature and the formate decomposition pathway on the barium dosed surfaces has been suggested.
