A laboratory model unit for ion-nitriding was designed with provisions for studying the effects of process variables such as gas pressure, gas components, voltage, etc. Microscopy and x-ray diffraction studies of the nitrided layers and microhardness measurements show that the unit is satisfactory for laboratory operation.
