A strain of Beijerinckia was obsd. to fix considerable mts. of N on the leaf surfaces of cotton plants. The bacterium occurred invariably in assocn. with a fungus belonging to the genus Alternaria. A polysaccharide, secreted xtracellularly by the fungus, stimulated nitrogenase ctivity of the bacterium under cultural conditions. The fungal polysaccharide seems to help the bacterium by equestering O from the environment.
