Abstract
The phenomenon of phase separation and double stage crystallization in chalcogenide glasses is an unusual property of considerable interest. In continuation of the work of $Ge_{20}Te_{80}$ and $Al_{23}Te_{77}$ [1-3], the crystallization of bulk $Si_{20}Te_{80}$ glass has been studied. The crystallization processes are intimately related to the short range order present in the glassy state. In most glasses, the glass to supercooled liquid transition precedes the crystallization, when the glass is heated, in say a DSC run. Some glasses show an interesting behaviour, the so-called "double glass transition phenomena". The well known examples are Te-Ge-Se [4], $Te_{80}Ge_{12.5}Pb_{7.5}$ [5], $(Pd_5Ni_5)_{1-y}P_y$ [6], Te-Si- Pb [7], $Ge_{20}Te_{80}$ [1] and $Al_{23}Te_{77}$ [2, 3, 8]. In this study of glass $Si_{20}Te_{80}$ sample, a similar double glass transition phenomena, associated with double stage crystallization, is observed.
