The structures and electronic properties of $LnCuS_2$ (Ln = rare earth, yttrium) were studied. The phases with Ln = La, Nd, Sm and Gd crystallize in a monoclinic layer structure, whereas those of the heavier rare earths and Y have an orthorhombic structure related to $ScCuS_2$. $LuCuS_2$ has an orthorhombic and hexagonal $(ScCuS_2)$ structure. These sulfides are p-type semiconductors with optical band gaps \sim 2.2-2.5 eV. $LnCuS_2$ (Ln = La, Nd, Sm , Gd) luminescence at \sim 750 nm.
