Abstract

With a view to assessing the role of thyroxine in the regulation of mitochondrial function during heat acclimation, the effects of thyroidectomy, propylthiouracil administration and heat exposure on oxidative phosphorylation by hepatic mitochondria were studied. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased by all the treatments (3 wk). Loss of oxidation in hypothyroidism, but not in heat exposure, could be partially corrected by the addition of exogenous cytochrome c. The cytochrome oxidase activity of mitochondria and the content of cytochrome aa3 decreased by 50% in heat exposure but not in hypothyroidism. Mitochondria isolated from heat-exposed animals showed a significant decrease (35%) in the concentration of high-affinity binding sites for cytochrome c. The total lipids and phospholipids of mitochondria showed a significant decrease (50%) in content on heat acclimation. The levels of both tri- and tetraiodothyronine in liver and serum were decreased significantly in heat-acclimated animals.
