The preparation of the norsesquiterpenic ketoindane, ar-chiloscyphone $(I; R=COCMe:CH_2, R_1=H)$, related biogenetically to the naturally occurring ketone II is described. Hydrogenolysis of I $(R=CH_2OH, R_1=OH)$ gave I $(R=CH_2OH, R_1=H)$. Grignard reaction on I (R=CHO) with $H_2C:CMeMgBr$ and allylic oxidation of the resulting alcohol gave I $(R=COCMe:CH_2)$.
