Abstract

Studies on the pyrolysis leading to ignition of polystyrene-$NH_4ClO_4$, PVC-$NH_4ClO_4$, and polyphenol-formaldehyde-$NH_4ClO_4$ propellants reveals that the activation energy of ignition depends strongly upon the binder. Double-base propellants have an empirical relation between the ignition delay $(\tau)$ and the oxidizer concentration; when the same equation is applied to composite solid propellants, the plot of ln $\tau$ vs, ln C (C = concn, %) yields a straight line with a knee corresponding to 65-70% $NH_4ClO_4$, above which the dependence on $\tau$ becomes less sensitive.
