Abstract
Precise measurement and characterization provide the basis for scientific knowledge development. Partial discharge (PD) measurement and characterization is popular for installation condition monitoring. Over the years, PD tests have become one of the important tests for insulation quality assessment. Other than this, PD tests can also provide vital information on different aspects of insulation ageing useful for equipment integrity verification and diagnosis. Various studies on PD started as early as 1920’s and currently, it is a subject in teaching and research at university level. Inspite of much in-depth studies related to PD, difficulties exist with its terminology, measurement and evaluation of PD.
