Vilsmeier reaction of methoxycyclohexadienes by DMF/POCl3 gave di- and triformylbenzenes. The reaction involved multiple attack of the electrophilic Vilsmeier complex on the double bonds of the methoxycyclohexadienes, hydrolysis to formyl groups, air oxidation., and in some cases, an addition elimination sequence.
