Abstract

The lysozyme mutant colitis phage induced a lytic enzyme 21 min after infection of the host, Escherichia coli B. Unlike the wild phage-induced lysozyme, this lytic enzyme acted on E. coli cells but not on Micrococcus lysodeikticus cells. It also differed from hen egg white lysozyme and other lytic enzymes induced by colitis, \lambda, and $T4$ phages in heat stability, mol. wt., and optimum $Mg^2^+$ concn. The antibodies raised against the lytic enzyme did not cross-react with hen egg white or colitis phage lysozymes or \lambda phage lytic enzyme.
