Abstract

Photolysis of alkyl cinnamates in $H_2O$ gave \delta-truxinates in near quant. yield. Dimerization of alkyl cinnamates at low concn. (about 10-4 M) in $H_2O$ was due to hydrophobic assocn. of the solutes. At such low concns. photolysis in benzene and MeOH gave only the geometric isomers. This study illustrates the value of $H_2O$ as a solvent for photoreactions and focusses on its utility as a reaction medium.
