Abstract

Esters e.g. $PhCO_2R [R = Me, Et, Me_2CH, Me(CH_2)7, PhCH_2] PhCH_2CO_2Et$, and $4-MeOC_6H_4CO_2Me$ were cleaved with $AlCl_3-NaI$ in MeCn to give 49-98% the corresponding acids. Only the alkyl ester of $4-BzOC_6H_4CO_2Me$ was cleaved to give 96% $4-BzOC_6H_4CO_2H$. The ease of cleavage of esters is in the order $PhCH_2>Me>Et>Me_2CH$ mchgt.Ph. Ph esters and aryl alkyl ethers are unaffected by the reagent.
