Abstract

An analytical solution of transient heat conduction derived by H.S. Carslaw and J.C. Jaeger (1959) for a long cylinder subjected to step input was employed to determine the thermal behavior of cores in solidification of castings. Experimental work was performed on Al-12.05 Si-0.15% Mn samples (as the cast material) using $CO_2$-hardened Na silicate molds and cores to confirm the validity of the analytical model. The temperature distribution, core saturation, and heat extension obtained by the model were in good correlation with the experimental results.
