Abstract

Intramol. donor-acceptor systems I (M = Zn, Cu; n = 1, 2) bearing porphyrins covalently linked to phenolphthalein at various distances and at different orientations have been synthesized. Optical absorption and emission spectra and magnetic resonance studies reveal interaction between the porphyrin unit and lactone/semiquinone forms of phenolphthalein. The charge-transfer quenching of fluorescence in these systems is found to be more pronounced compared to the intermol. systems. The lifetime studies are interpreted in terms of intramol. electron transfer.
