Abstract
Solid state amorphization has achieved considerable importance in recent years [I]. In particular, the mechanical alloying technique has been widely studied [2]. It is the simplest of all the solid state amorphizing techniques available and, also, the amorphous powders can readily be compacted to useful shapes and sizes with techniques like shock wave compaction [3]. Eventhough mechanical alloying has been applied to many binary alloy systems, very few ternary a11oy systems have been tried thus far [4-6]. The main reason seems to be the lack of understanding of the mechanism of amorphization in the latter case. On the other hand, in the case of binary systems, definite criteria for the synthesis of amorphous phases from the pure metal mixtures have been evolved. These are a high negative heat of mixing of the liquid phase in comparison with the solid solutions and the anomalously fast diffusion of one element in the other
