Abstract
The Biological Diversity Act 2002, recently enacted by the Indian parliament, is a significant, indeed, a pioneering piece of legislation. It responds to a number of new, emerging concerns: firstly, the result of new developments in technology, in particular, biotechnology and information technology, and, secondly, the ongoing degradation of the environment, inevitably accompanied by an erosion of biological diversity.
