Abstract

The reaction of AgX with the diphosphazane ligand, $Pr^iN(PPh_2)_2$ (L) gives the polymeric complexes, $[Ag_2(\mu-X)_2(\mu-L)]_n$ $(X = NO_3 \hspace{2mm} 1a \hspace{2mm} or \hspace{2mm} OSO_2CF_3 \hspace{2mm} 1b)$. Single crystal X-ray analysis of 1a reveals a novel structural motif formed by interlinking of giant 40-membered rings; the diphosphazane ligand L adopts a unique $‘C_s’$ geometry. These polymeric complexes exhibit a completely reversible ring-opening polymerization– depolymerization relationship with the dinuclear and mononuclear complexes, $[\{Ag(\mu-L)(X)\}_2] (X=NO_3 \hspace{2mm} 2a, X = OSO_2CF_3 2b)$ and $[Ag(k^2-L)_2\]X (X = NO_3 \hspace{2mm}3a, X = OSO_2CF_3 3b)$.
