Abstract

A new media access scheme for voice/data integration on CSMA/CD network is proposed. In conventional CSMA/CD systems, statistical fluctuations in transmission delay may cause disruptions in the reconstructed voice waveforms. This does not happen in the new scheme. In the new method, voice stations follow a new media access protocol, termed voice train/data slot scheme, and transmit one after another forming a `voice train'. The data stations continue to follow CSMA/CD-like protocol, so that existing data networks can be enhanced to support integrated service, with little or no change in hardware and software. The scheme is fully distributed and robust. It provides TDM-like slots to each active voice station and under full voice load condition, it functions as TDM scheme.
