A field experiment on electricity generation at decentralized level based on a 3.7 kW woodgas system is conducted in Hosahalli, a nonelectrified village in South India. All the 43 houses are provided with two lighting points along with eight street lights. Energy forest has been raised to supply an annual wood fuel requirement of 5.1 t and about 1 Ha of forest is found to be adequate for a sustainable supply. The village community has accepted this decentralized self-reliant system. The field experiment demonstrates the technical feasibility of the decentralized woodgas based system.
