Abstract

The electrode surface roughness can cause a considerable reduction of the threshold for breakdown in strongly electronegative gases and gas mixtures. Investigations on the influence of surface roughness on the breakdown voltage of $SF_6$ and its mixtures have been done by some workers at and above atmospheric pressures mostly under DC conditions. In this paper, AC breakdown voltages in uniform fields have been measured for $SF_6$, $SF_6+N_2$ and $SF_6+CO_2$ mixtures from 300 to 630 Torr and 5 to 10 mm gap for smooth electrodes and for electrodes whose surface roughness is represented by a hemispherical protrusion. The observations show that the reduction in the breakdown voltage depends upon the electrical field strength of gas and its mixtures for the same roughness. It is also found that 50% $SF_6+N_2$ mixture has almost the same breakdown value as pure $SF_6$ in the presence of a protrusion.
