The authors analyse the physical process that leads to the small oscillation instability of a synchronous generator. A self-tuning stabilizer based on this analysis has been fabricated and extensively tested on a laboratory model power system and on a 210 MW synchronous generator in a power station. The authors provide some of the test results.
