Abstract

In an attempt to develop a neural network for object recognition from image data, extensive simulation experiments have been conducted on the neural net model, neo-cognitron, proposed by K. Fukushima (1980) for pattern recognition. On the basis of these, a critical assessment is made of the neocognitron's actual capabilities. The main conclusion is that this model requires considerable modifications for a satisfactory recognition of 2-D patterns
