The author asks, in the limit the initial variances go to zero, does the response variance in time also go to zero? If it does, the author calls the given nonlinear system deterministic, otherwise the system is chaotic. It may be noted that this definition characterizes stochastically the dependence of the system on the initial conditions. What are the implications of this point of view? This is best followed by taking a typical nonlinear oscillator, which has been studied by other investigators, for the existence of chaos.
