Abstract

Capacitive-resistive transients prevail in EM field problems where the contribution of magnetic field to the electric field is negligible. Such transients are present in dielectric systems where bulk conductivity or surface conductivity or both are significant. For the analysis and design of insulating systems, temporal and spatial distribution of the electric field is important. In this paper, the governing equations are discussed. An algorithm for solving capacitive-resistive transients with the help of a Laplace solver is presented. Any Laplace solver can be used for this purpose. The algorithm is applied to some illustrative problems. The first of them has a circuit theoretical solution with which the solution by the present algorithm compares very well. The second problem involves widely different time constants. In the third, both surface and bulk conductivities are considered.
