Abstract

The step function response of non-linear spring mass systems with restoring force characteristics of the form (i) $f(x) = \alpha x + \beta(sgnx)|x|^2, (ii) f(x) =\beta(sgnx)|x|^2 + yx^3, (iii) f(x) = \alpha x + \beta(sgn x)|x|^2 + yx^3$, is investigated. Exact expressions are obtained for the maximum response and the period of oscillation in terms of well-tabulated special functions. Results are presented in graphical form for a wide range of parameters.
