Abstract
While the dynamic analysis of framed structures can be performed on the basis that they have continuously distributed properties, the analyses are complex and practicable only in the case of very simple structures. More conveniently, a finite element based approach can be adopted in which framed structures are discretized into segments and the displacements of the interconnecting nodes constitute the generalized co-ordinates (or dynamic degreess of freedom) of the structure. The number of one dimensional elements selected depends on the physical arrangement of the structure. Not all of the degrees of freedom need be considered in determining the response to an arbitrary dynamic load. Kinematic constraints are adopted to reduce the degrees of freedom in order to save computational effort without significant loss of accuracy.
