Abstract
Polymer composites constitute an important group of modern materials. They are widely used in the aviation, chemical, nuclear and automobile fields because of their lightness, high corrosion resistance, ease of fabrication and good strength-to-weight ratio. Of the resins used for such purposes, epoxies figure most prominently. Hot-cure phenolics, which used to find many applications in high-technology areas until the 1950s, gave way to epoxies because of the latter's better adhesion with reinforcements, lesser processing problems and overall superior mechanical properties. Phenolics, due to the presence of products of condensation such as water vapour, which during curing could lead to void formation [1], tend to exhibit inferior mechanical properties [2] to epoxies. This lacuna severely restricts their role in many fields.
