It is now well accepted that electronic databases hold the key to improving information accessibility-the ease and quickness with which our scholars, technologists, business, trade and industrial establishments can access relevant information. Currently there is a wide gap in the information accessibility of both actual and potential information users in our country compared to those in developed countries. Though several interactive factors (social, economic, political and technological) may be considered responsible for this situation, two issues that may have direct impact on narrowing this gap are production of our own databases and improved utilisation of existing databases. An attempt is made in this paper to indicate a few options and strategies related to these two aspects. The point of view taken here is that of potential database producers and database service providers (0 refs.)
