Abstract

We propose a table-top setup integrated with MEMS-based sensors for the electro-thermal characterization of tumour and normal tissues. The bulk DC conductivity (as a function of temperature) and normalized conductance (as a function of excitation frequency) is quantified to delineate between freshly excised tumour from murine xenograft tumour model and normal murine tissues. It is observed that the tumour tissues have a higher DC and AC conductivity compared to normal tissues from the lung and liver. The DC conductivity of the tumour tissue drops more drastically as a function of temperature compared to the normal tissue. Likewise, the AC conductivity of tumour tissue also increases more rapidly beyond a cutoff frequency. These observations suggest that such an electro-thermal characterization of excised tissues could serve as a basis for tumour delineation. © 2021 IEEE.
