Abstract

The logarithm of activity coeffs. of the ternary system is derived on the basis of the Maclaurin infinite series which is expressed in terms of the integral property of the system. The derivation of the partials involves extensive summation of various infinite series pertaining to the first, second and third order interaction parameters. The reciprocal relations of these parameters are used exclusively in the derivation of the partial components of the system. The thermodn. consistency of the partial functions based on the Maxwell relation and compliance with respect to the reciprocal relations were established. The physico-chem. aspects of the parameters were emphasized using the central atoms model. The inclusion of higher order parameters has widened the range of applicability of the partials. They are capable of interpreting the isoactivity data of the Fe-C-Si and Fe-C-Ti systems and properties of their constituent binaries. Furthermore, the derived values of the parameters are susceptible to physico-chem. interpretation based on the central atoms model.
