Abstract

A fabric made of 100% acrylic fiber "Cashmilon" was partially hydrolyzed to convert a fraction of its nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups and then gel-coated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) resin and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to produce a multifunctional sorbent in fabric form containing weakly acidic, weakly basic, and chelating groups and possessing many times higher initial sorption rate, as compared to commercial ion-exchange and chelating sorbents which are commonly used in bead form. The sorption properties of the novel fabric-form sorbent were measured using Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution as the sorbate to determine the effects of pH and the presence of common ions in the substrate on the sorption capacity. The rate of sorption on the sorbent fabric was measured in comparison with that on commercial Amberlite resins, IRC-50and IRA-68, to demonstrate the marked difference between fabric and bead-form sorbents in kinetic behavior.
