Abstract

A comparative study of the surface oxidation of Gd and Yb was carried out by XPS. The surface oxides formed are $Gd_2O_3$ and $Yb_2O_3$, resp. The surface oxidn. of Yb shows some unusual features which are explained in terms of the transfer of a 4f electron to the ligand site in case of Yb3+ leading to a large change in at. radii.
