Abstract

A detailed determination of upper and lower critical solution temperatures ($T_s$) for the mixture 3-methylpyridine, water and heavy water is presented. The curvature of the line that connects these critical points is quadratic. It is given by $|T_S-T_D|=B_1|X-X_D|^{B2}$ where X=weight fraction of heavywater in (water+heavy water); $T_D$ and $X_D$ are the coordinates of the double critical point. The exponent $B_2=0.51\pm0.004$ is in accordance with the expectation of a parabolic nature. The symmetry of the curve about $T_D$ is also studied.
