Abstract

Describes a voltage variable resistor (varistor) in which the variation of resistance due to an applied voltage is produced through the coupling of piezo-electric strain to a thick film resistor. It has been found that this resistor can give rise to a positive coefficient of resistance when used as a three or four terminal device. Theoretical estimation of the change in resistance with voltage in terms of the various physical parameters like $d_{33}$ of the piezo-electric substrate and the composition and grain size of the thick film resistor, is also described.
