The title aldehyde was obtained from 4-methyl-3-penten-2-ol. The unsaturated alcohol was treated with DMF and $POCl_3$ at $80^0$ to give 4-methylisophthalaldehyde and some 2-methyl-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxaldehyde.
