Administration of noradrenaline (I) [51-41-2] to rats increased activities of succinate dehydrogenase (EC 1.3.99.1) [9002-02-2], succinate-neotetrazolium reductase [37217-40-6], and succinate oxidase [9014-35-1] in mitochondria obtained from liver, but not kidney and heart. The max. stimulation was obtained 2 h after treatment with the hormone. The stimulation required a crit., narrow range of I concn. The action of I was sensitive to propranolol, a \beta-adrenergic blocking agent. Treatment with theophylline and glucagon, known to increase intracellular concn. of cyclic AMP [60-92-4], and with 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl serine, known to be decarboxylated to I in cytosol, also showed a similar stimulation of succinate dehydrogenase. These studies provide an interesting example of stimulation of an enzyme on treatment of animals with I by a combined \beta-receptor and possible cytosolic levels of action of the hormone.
