Abstract

A review. Understanding mechanisms that regulate when, where and how flowers are formed will provide insights into the control of cell-fate detn. in plants. Flowering in higher plants is regulated by both genetic and environmental factors, and culminates in formation of specialized organs, specific to the flower, which are patterned in a species-specific manner. How distinct cellular identities such as that of floral meristem or even that of a floral organ primordium are established is a challenging avenue of research. Genetic analyses of mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana and in Antirrhinum majus that affect flowering time, flower position on the stem, and floral organ patterns have pioneered investigations of this pathway. The mol. characterization of these genes reveals how 'master genes'; encoding transcription factors, for e.g., MADS domain and EREBP domain contg. proteins, or signaling mols., for e.g., LRR receptors and downstream components det. many aspects of cell-fate specification during flowering. This review discusses the genetic and epigenetic control of the transition to the reproductive phase, specification of floral meristems, establishment and maintenance of floral organ identities in the model plant species Arabidopsis. To exemplify evolutionarily conserved and species-specific aspects of floral meristem specification and organ patterning we discuss the recent studies of rice genes related by sequence to key Arabidopsis floral meristem patterning and organ identity genes.
