Abstract

An ESR investigation has been carried out between 4 and 300K on $La_{1-y}Y_yAl_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$ perovskites giving evidence of low-spin $Ni(III)$ as expected from the behavior of $LaNiO_3$ and $YNiO_3$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements support those conclusions. It appears that substitution of $Y$ for $La$ increases the g-values and favors the static Jahn-Teller effect with respect to the dynamic one. The results are discussed assuming that $LaNiO_3$ is metallic and $YNiO_3$ an insulator.
