Under well established synoptic conditions the Monsoon Trough (MT) extends from the Bay of Bengal to western Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan. Before the onset of the monsoon, a dry heat low (monsoon trough) is maintained by dry convection of heat and dust. At the onset of the monsoon dry convection changes over to (deep) moist convection at the eastern end of the trough. An inter-disciplinary coordinated project `Monsoon trough boundary layer experiment' (MONTBLEX) is envisaged during 1990. Preliminary results of the data obtained are presented.
