Abstract

A formal synthesis of the aromatic sesquiterpenes (+/-)-herbertene and (+/-)-cuparenesis accomplished via an efficient synthesis of 1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentanemethanol employing a combination of Claisen rearrangement and ring-closing metathesis reactions.
