Abstract

The analysis of coupling between inclined waveguide modes is presented. Each of the interacting modes is represented in a separate coordinate system and the coupling along an axis in a common coordinate system. A new set of coupled mode equations is derived that contains coupling coefficients with meanings different from the straight waveguide coupling coefficients. A simple formula for the field amplitude in individual waveguides is derived for the case of inclined planar waveguides. Comparisons are done with the existing Piecewise Approximation Method and the Beam Propagation Method. The present theory is extended to the anaiysis of Cerenkov type SHG to include the angle between the interacting modes and numerical examples are presented.
