Abstract

An amorphous phase has been synthesized in the Al-Ti system over a composition range of 40-90 at% of Ti by mechanical alloying in a planetary mill with a milling intensity of 6(i.e. 490 rpm or a ball velocity of $4.6 m s^{-1}$). At the milling intensity of 9 (i.e. 645 rpm or a ball velocity of $6.1 m s^{-1}$) the $Al_{75}T_{25}$ composition which is outside the glass forming range at the milling intensity of 6 has become amorphous. The strain in Ti was found to reach a critical value before the start of amorphization. The free energy of the amorphous phase was calculated at 300 K using Miedema's model. The amorphous phase was seen to have a stability range of 4-90 at% Ti from the free energy calculations, while the enthalpy-composition diagram has shown a stability range of 12-85 at% Ti for the amorphous phase. Use of a regular solution model, on the other hand, has shown that at all compositions in this system, crystalline solid solutions are more stable when compared to amorphous phase, thus yielding no glass forming range.
