Abstract

The electromagnetic force density distribution in the interior of MPD thrusters is investigated by numerically solving the electromagnetic equations. It is found that the maximum force densities occur on the cathode longitudinal surface. Hydrogen propellant is found to result in the largest axial force density magnitudes among the propellants investigated. Increasing plasma temperatures significantly increase the force density magnitudes. Larger plasma velocities are found to be useful in reducing very sharp peaks in force densities found at the upstream end of the cathode.
