Abstract

Haldar, S. and D.K. Subramanian, an affinity-based dynamic load balancing protocol for distributed transaction processing systems, Performance Evaluation 17 (1993) 53-71. This paper presents an affinity-based dynamic load balancing protocol that exploits access affinities of transactions to rationalize workload on processors (or sites) in a locally distributed transaction processing system. The protocol achieves an optimal balance between two well-known load balancing techniques, namely, affinity-based routing and dynamic load balancing. It selects execution sites for the transactions based on their affinity sites and the current system load distribution. It acts as a two-pronged device in optimizing the average response time. It follows affinity-based routing when the system load is evenly balanced, and adopts some technique of dynamic load balancing when load deviation of the system crosses some threshold value. The behavior of the protocol, and hence the system performance, could be controlled easily by adjusting the values of two system parameters.
