Abstract

The requirement of enhanced tribological and mechanical properties has influenced the usage of advanced processing techniques for metals and alloys. Friction stir processing (FSP) is one such technique that can be carried out in the solid state at elevated temperatures which improves the material properties by grain refinement. In this work, AZ31 Mg alloy was subjected to single pass FSP. Hardness variations after processing was analyzed using a micro-hardness tester. Dry sliding wear behavior of the processed alloy was studied using a vertical pin on disc tribometer with SS304 counter face at 0.2 m/s and 0.8 m/s sliding speed with a contact pressure of 2.77 MPa. A reduction in hardness value was observed after processing (61 HV-AZ31 Mg, 54 HV-processed AZ31 Mg) however the wear properties of the processed alloy was found to have improved. An overall improvement of 15 in dry sliding wear property in the abrasive regime was reported and can be attributed to the grain refinement of the alloy occurred during FSP.
