Abstract

A solution of sulphur monobromide in carbon tetrachloride was found to undergo hydrolytic reactions giving sulphide, sulphite, thiosulphate, polythionates and elemental sulphur in different quantities depending upon experimental conditions. Such a solution was also found to react with anhydrous hydrogen iodide producing hydrogen sulphide quantitatively and liberating an equivalent amount of iodine. A solution of sulphur monobromide in dioxane was oxidized smoothly by chloramine-T, converting the entire S quantity to sulphuric acid.
