Abstract

Pb nanodispersions have been produced in silica matrix using sol-gel technique. Pb(NO3)(2) is chosen as the precursor for yielding Pb. A detailed study has been carried out consequently to understand the phase transformation behaviour of the nanodispersed Pb in constrained amorphous matrix. Although the melting is sharp, solidification of the nanodispersed Pb occurs over a very wide temperature range. Using a novel design of experiment, it is shown that the nucleation occurs at two temperature ranges with broad distributions. An iterative simulation procedure is adopted to understand this behaviour in the frame work of classical heterogeneous nucleation theory. The result indicates that two Gaussian spreads of contact angles around 50 degrees and 80 degrees respectively yield a good fit with the experimental result. The possible nature of the interface which can rationalize the observation is discussed.
