Satheesh et al. (2006, hereafter S06) used measurements of surface radiation to quantify changes in irradiance due to aerosols in Bangalore, India. S06 also made model estimates by incorporating aerosol microphysical and optical properties measured simultaneously at the same location into radiation models, using the conventional assumption that aerosols are externally mixed. We found large discrepancies between the model estimates and observed aerosol-induced changes in irradiance at the surface. We showed that observed and modeled aerosol radiative effects only agree if the aerosol is described in the radiative transfer models in the form of internally mixed shell type aerosol.
